Chapter 34 - Nothing Remains the Same

Delia had finally taken over management of the fortune teller wagon. She was now in charge and had become very good at reading people. She knew their deepest and darkest secrets the instant she spoke to them. The town's people seemed somehow to be aware as if she emitted an aura that warned people off. They just seemed to sense that she could see into their very soul and knew their secrets so they began to avoid Delia. Or maybe they just knew she now ran the Fortune Tellers and were very afraid of her.

Regardless, Delia used this to her advantage to find things out. Now that she was in charge of the Fortune Tellers, she had gained access to well guarded secrets and nobody challenged her on it. She found documentation in vaults that went back several centuries.

As she was skimming through it, the name Riverhawk caught her attention. In it, she found that the Riverhawk family was descended from a long line of witches and her late husband Nicholas was indeed a witch. That didn't surprise her. She had found the wand. But why didn't she sense that about him?  Maybe he was able to guard that part of himself.

As she read the detailed accounting of the Riverhawk coven's secret meetings, what did surprise Delia was that the 'girlfriend' he left for her was also a witch and they were destined to marry one another. It is against this coven's laws to marry a 'mortal'. When they heard about a woman that was creating and selling potions in the Elixir store, they needed someone to meet her to find out if she was another witch coming to take over Hidden Springs.

Nicholas was chosen and he set out to meet her. That proved to be difficult as she kept very much to herself and her daughter. Then when he learned she was doing online dating, he signed up. He finally met Delia and he immediately sensed something about her was unusual. He knew she had special powers, but he didn't think she was a witch but he just wasn't sure what she was. When she read him, he could tell she didn't tell him everything. His coven suggested he continue to hang around to see if he could figure out what her agenda was. Marriage was never part of the plan.

Nicholas wasn't unattracted to her. She was quite easy to be with and he enjoyed her company. Francie was sweet and devoted to her mom and easily accepted him into her life. This was hard on Nicholas's girlfriend, but she understood. He knew Delia cared for him, but she had already pushed him away once and without a commitment it was going to be over. Even after their encounter in the Fairy Arboretum, she was pushing him out again. Her whole demeanor changed when she entered the arboretum. He wondered if maybe she might be part fairy. Delia rolled her eyes at that part of the narrative. To try to find out more, he asked her to marry him. It was the only way to gain her trust. Then when she confided in him, he would leave her. He would simply drag out the engagement.

When Nicholas found out she was pregnant, he had to go through with the marriage because the child she was carrying might be a witch or even worse some sort of hybrid. Nicholas had to be around to see to it. If the child was't a witch, then he would divorce her marry his true love. He couldn't keep doing this.

Delia locked the records back up in the vault dumbfounded. She was in total shock. She thought Nicholas truly loved her when it was only a marriage of convenience for him. She knew he wasn't too happy she had become pregnant but passed that off as being taken by surprise by a life changing event.

As she thought about the last 8 years of her life, a tear slid down her cheek. Poor Aiden. He had very likely inherited his father's powers since Nicholas didn't leave her. But what exactly are those powers? She never saw Nicholas perform any witchcraft. The signs were there. Aiden liked to pretend he was riding a broom. He put training wheels on the old broomstick and zipped around on it not unlike kids that used them as a horse.

And then there was Nicholas’s cat. Cole brought Aiden insects and things all the time. They were inseparable. Legend was witches thrive with a 'familiar'. She began to believe that nothing was ever really as it it seemed. The potions, ghosts, zombies, magic wands, vampires and now witches. All real. But what could she do?  She didn’t know if Aiden really was a witch, although the tendencies seem to be there. Thank goodness Nate and Francie were perfectly normal - mortal - human beings. But why did the coven think Aiden might be a hybrid?

Delia went home completely exhausted and upset. She started missing her Francisco even more now that she learned the truth about Nicholas. She wished she had stayed in Appaloosa Plains. That night she dreamed of Francisco. She hadn't had any of those dreams for a long while. Probably because she had been happy for all those years. The sense of loss was worse now than when Nicholas died. She knew her and Francisco's love was real. In her dream, Francisco was kissing her and holding her. It was so very comforting. The next morning she cried a little more before getting up. She must move on and take care of her Aiden. He will definitely need her help. There was no one else. The Riverhawk coven blamed her for Nicholas’s death and want nothing more to do with her or Aiden. She wondered if his life might even be in danger.
