Chapter 28 - The Dating Game

Delia jumped right in and started surfing the online dating sites. It was a long tedious process. She chatted with a few of them online, but it seemed they all had some weird quirk. She couldn’t help but compare them Francisco. That was just going to have to stop! No one was perfect. She knew she wasn’t and if they knew her secrets she would NEVER have anyone in her life so she finally setup a few dates.

The guys that came to meet her seemed interested. But the chemistry wasn’t there.

Things were going well with the first one until he saw Francie and bolted.

Then there was the handsome professional athlete. He was promising and there was mutual attraction, but when she wanted more than a one night stand he too took off.  Seems like everyone was just looking for a hook up!

And then, there was Nicholas Riverhawk. He was sweet and unassuming.  He seemed perfect!  She felt all tingly when he shyly kissed her. Or maybe she was just so happy to have someone want kiss her and not run!  She told him about her daughter up front. That didn't seem to matter to him, he was still interested.

Delia was doing well in her job. She was learning so much and was discovering that things she always thought were silly ghost stories actually were based in fact. She could add her experiences to that for sure. Things that go bump in the  night, zombies that want to eat your brains, ghosts that can transcend between the spirit world and the natural world, magical potions that seem to cause physical transformations, both good and
evil. But it seems only certain people had the ability to ‘see’ and perform these transformations or even use the recipes to make the potions. Delia was very perceptive and evidently had this gift.

As she and Nicholas continued their courtship, he started asking a lot of questions about her 'fortune telling' career. She laughed it off as nonsense that people wanted to hear. He asked her if she could 'read' his mind. She wasn't sure she wanted to, but he insisted. He seemed to think of it as some sort of 'experiment'.

That is when she discovered he had another girlfriend! She didn't let him know right then that she had been able to read his mind; but the look on her face was probably a dead giveaway. Delia was conflicted.  She was falling in love with him. She let him spend the night to 'prove' to him she couldn't read his mind. She was fearful of losing him, but then afterwards had second thoughts. Francie was almost in high school and Della needed a commitment from Nicholas or it was over between them.
Francie's 16th birthday was upon them and she still hadn't told Nicholas she knew about his two-timing. Even though she let him spend the night after the mind reading incident, she had began to distance herself from him. He would call and she would be conveniently 'busy'.
The day of Francie’s party came so they went across the street to the Fairyland Park to celebrate. This was a special day for her and unlike her 6th birthday, she had a real party with lots of her friends from school including some of Delia’s coworkers. It was a beautiful spring day and the party was going well. Francie had blossomed into a beautiful young lady. Delia was so proud of her.
Francie

After the festivities began to settle quiet down, Nicholas showed up. He said he missed her and wanted to know why she was avoiding him. Delia didn't want a fight right there at Francie's party so she made nice.
Nicholas asked Delia to go into the Fairy Arboretum and talk privately. She reluctantly agreed. They went inside and sat on a bench. It felt so right for her to be inside. That was a feeling she hadn't expected. It had a very calming effect on her like this is where she should be. This is when he told her he loved her and had missed her so much, especially after the last time they were together. She let him kiss her and then just melted in his arms. Then, right there in the privacy of the Arboretum, things got mighty steamy! Delia prayed this meant he had made up his mind and she wouldn't have to confront him.
After the party, she asked him to come over. This was it – make a decision now or leave us alone. Delia was going to confront him. Francie didn’t need a part time lover coming over to see her mom.  She was old enough to know what that was about and Delia would remain alone rather than do that to Francie. She was going to tell him it was over.
That was when he surprised her. Nicholas said this was something he wanted to give her after the last time they were together but she wouldn't see him. He reached in his pocket and pulled out a little black velvet box, opened it up and asked her to marry him. Delia was over the moon. This was more than she could have hoped for. She was going to be married.  Everything was perfect.
