Chapter 96 - Mother and Child Reunion

Cordell took control of Delia's laptop and began searching for clues. They both knew the men were still in Riverview.  Troy's picture was occasionally seen in a news story or he was mentioned. Being the Mayor, he can't exactly just disappear without an explanation.

Cordell started hacking into Troy's finances and saw a large cash withdrawal not long before Jewel went missing.  It was going slower than he thought but he was loving living here with his 'pretty lady' and really hoped she would warm up to him.

After more than two months of nothing, Delia was losing her patience. Cordell had found her wine cellar and regularly helped himself.  Delia also discovered he did still have some 'powers' which manifested themselves in a pink mist. He would float places and even magically clean the house for her.  She didn't mind that so much. But Delia was afraid he was stalling and was ready to have it out with him once again.

When she found Cordell, she saw he was once again enjoying a glass of wine. He quickly grabbed a glass and handed it to her as soon as he saw the look on her face. He knew she was going to be unhappy with him again. But he was making progress.  He was close to finding out where the men were hiding.

"Two weeks!" said Delia, "no more. After that you are out of here and I will just hide out and follow them. I don't know why you don't do that anyway."

"Ohhh, pretty lady, there is too much security around the military base where Sherman works and the City Hall where Troy works. The risk is too high that we will be spotted. You will lose Jewel forever should you do such a foolish thing. Please know that I am close.  It looks like he paid cash for a hideout. I just need to find the real estate transaction that matches up. I am close to getting into the tax records to find out the ownership. Of course he probably didn't buy it under his name. But I will search for the transaction. It just takes time. Please be patient. I will get the pretty baby for my pretty lady very soon and then you will love me just like you love her."

Love you?  Never in a million years! thought Delia as she took a drink and said, "Don't count on it Genie....you just better hope you come through soon or there will be hell to pay."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two weeks later Troy was still trying to keep his relationship with Sherman intact. He was so lucky to have found him. They were perfect together. Sherman was down to earth and solid where Troy was sometimes reckless. They still had not gotten married much to Troy's dismay.

Sherman got home from work and went to find his lover. He found him just where he thought he would. In Jewel's room. He spent almost every waking moment with that child. Troy, why can't you see that this child is destroying our relationship? he thought to himself. Maybe if I make a romantic dinner for us we can spend the night together like we used to. "Troy, how about I make us some dinner and you take a break while the baby naps and we can have some alone time?" asked Sherman sweetly.

Troy was relieved Sherman wasn't angry and figured he had better not mess this up. "Sherm, I am sorry," said Troy, "I don't mean to ignore you, she just is so needy and I am really tired after seeing to her all day. But, yes, that sounds really nice. Thank you for hanging in there with me."  Then he kissed his lover.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cordell came running out to the pool where Delia was trying to relax and take her mind off of things yelling excitedly, "Delia! Pretty Lady! I think I have found it!"  Then he handed her a glass of wine as had become his normal peace offering.

"Found what? The hideout?" asked Delia.  Cordell bobbed his head up and down. "Oh God, where, where is it?  Let's go!"

"No, love, not let's go. I will go. You must stay here. Sit by the pool and relax. You shall soon be reunited with your daughter. Hah - like the song - Mother and Child Reunion - No? Now, if you will excuse me, I must be off . If things go well, I will be back within 2 hours. "

Delia almost laughed and hugged him but held herself back. She would NOT give him that satisfaction nor did she want to encourage his ridiculous fantasies about the two of them. That just wasn't going to happen.

"Okay, then go - call me when you find them - I won't be able to stand it otherwise. Hurry."

Delia watched as Cordell excitedly ran off in a pink mist. She just hoped no one saw.

Chapter 95 - Gettin' Real

Cordell began to tell Delia about the steps to be able to release him. She thought they were the silliest things she had ever heard of.

Freeze the lamp as if I were in the coldest regions of the Earth. Heat the lamp as if I were in the hottest deserts. And finally take the lamp to the lowest depths of the caverns.

When these things are done, sweet lady, bring the lamp back here and you will be able to release the bonds that forever bind me to the lamp. I will become, shall we say, more like you than me.

Delia thought about it and she figured, she could stick the lamp in the freezer and freeze it and then place it in the oven to heat it.  As for the cavern, the only place she knew of were the catacombs by the graveyard. Why always around the dead? Well, she wasn't afraid of ghosts but maybe she should be.

She got started. She almost relished sticking the stupid lamp in the oven. She despised this man and didn't trust him at all.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the two months it took for Delia to complete the rituals, Troy was bonding with his daughter even though it was putting a strain on his relationship with Sherman.  Sherman was always so worried something might happen and Troy figured he was also a little jealous of Jewel.

Troy heard Sherman walk up behind him and braced himself for the argument that would probably soon follow about leaving the country. He had grown accustomed to his nervousness.

"Troy, I know you love Jewel, but we have to get away soon. The longer we stay here the more likely we are going to get caught. Delia - "

"Sherman!" interrupted Troy before he could finish, "that tramp hasn't even followed up with the detective that she called.  I TOLD you. I have connections at City Hall and have access to the reports. No one is looking for her. We have time. I don't want to leave until she is a bit older. Then we can move. So please stop."

"I am sorry. I - it's just - I love you and I don't want anything to happen to us."

Troy softened his tone at the man's statement, "I know Sherman. Me too. It will be fine."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Delia had finally been able to perform the last ritual. She carried the lamp down to the basement and began the final step in an attempt to release the invisible bonds that had chained Cordell to the magic lamp for eternity.

The bracelets glowed and began to crack.  Light began to emanate from the golden bands, and even from Cordell himself.  He seemed to be in pain and screamed.  Then in one last gasp, light came out of Cordell himself as if something was being expelled from his body that had held him captive to the lamp.

When it was over, he looked at Delia and smiled and said simply, "Man, am I hungry!"

Delia couldn't have been less pleased. "I thought you were going to LOOK human. You are still blue and you want to eat."

"Ahh, but Delia, I haven't eaten in over 1,000 years. Please pretty lady, indulge me. Then we can talk business. I hear you are an excellent cook."

Delia served Cordell some leftover crepes and he wolfed down not one, but two plates of food before she had seen enough.

"No more! It's time talk. It has been almost three months now since my daughter has gone missing. YOU said if I released you from the lamp, you would become human and would be able to find her and bring her to me. Look at you. You are a pig and you are blue.  No blue person can blend in. It was better when you were in the lamp."

"Don't fret Delia. I am sorry. Your food was so delicious and savory and I couldn't help myself. What can I say? But now. Let us talk about the missing child."

"Okay. So for starters, how are you going to find my Jewel and when you do how are you going to get her back?"

"But it is so simple Delia. I still have a few limited powers left so I will change my appearance to 'blend in' as you put it. Then, I will use your modern technology to locate the girl and simply take her back. Easy as pie - ohhhh speaking of pie -  you wouldn't have any key lime pie? That would be so awesome."

Delia was incredulous. She had jumped out of the frying pan into the fire with this - whatever he was. But she really had no other choices.

"No. Pie.  At least until you get rid of that hideous blue color. Can you please get on with it?"

Cordell reluctantly got up from the table.  He clapped his hands three times, much as he had done when he granted Delia's wish the first time.  He was enveloped in a pink mist and when the mist began to clear, a young nice looking man stood where the evil Genie was before. Delia had to look twice to be sure it was the same man. But when he smirked, she had no doubt.

After Cordell transformed himself into what he referred to as human he had a very smug look on his face and asked, "Will this suffice pretty lady?"

Okay, that IS much better! thought Delia. But she didn't want to give him any satisfaction.  She pointed her finger at him to let him know who was boss. "Let's get one thing straight. I am in charge here. You owe me for freeing you and now it is time for you to start working on finding my daughter!"

"But of course. That is why I am her with you now. Don't worry. I shall reunite Mother and Daughter soon. Please, no need to be so angry. The men won't get to keep the little one much longer. I, Cordell Shinn, will find and bring her home. Now, can I have pie?"

"I need a drink!" said Delia somewhat defeated.

"Oh yes! How wonderful. Fruit of the vine...how long has it been? Do you mind?"

Delia sighed and went over to the wine rack and began to pour drinks. She may as well try to get along with Cordell and a drink would help her to relax.  She was so wound up worrying about her daughter. The sad thing is that she couldn't do anything. Both Troy and Sherman would know if she started coming around and it might spook them. Then they might leave and never be found. Frankly she didn't really understand why they hadn't already left the country.

Cordell took the wine glass and chugged it down. If Delia hadn't been so upset she may have laughed at the way the giant of man held the glass with his pinkie finger in the air all dainty like.

Once she swallowed a few drinks of the wine and the alcohol began to calm and warm her she asked the genie, "So, what exactly is your plan?"

"I told you already love. I will use your modern day technology to find your little one."

Delia wanted to scream even with the wine calming her. "What does that mean exactly?" she asked trying to remain calm.

"Ahhh, the computing device. The Internet. It knows everything. I have, er had, one in my lamp. I had a lot of time to practice and am very good at finding out information."

"Please tell me you are joking."

"Why would I lie pretty lady - oh -  and you are out of wishes anyway."

"I am going to bed...There is a bedroom upstairs to the left you can sleep in. You DO sleep - right?"

"Yes...Of course. I am human now. No? And I have human needs and human desires.....pretty lady....and I have been in the lamp for 1,000 years."

"Goodnight Cordell,"said Delia and turned and went to bed to cry.

Chapter 94 - Wishing for Jewel

After the detective left, Delia went straight to the basement.  As she walked through the secret door, she thought, "That Genie is going to help me get my daughter back or else he will never see the light of day again! ..... but I must be careful. I still have two wishes and I must use them wisely....I don't want another mess like this one...."

Delia sighed and reached up on the top shelf and pulled down the lamp.  She rubbed it so the Genie would appear. She thought she was ready for whatever he had to throw at her and would choose her words carefully this time. No more foolish mistakes.

As soon as she rubbed the lamp the Genie appeared to her.

"Hi my pretty lady!  Cordell Shinn at your service. How is your love life?" asked the Genie.

That sent Delia over the edge!  How dare he! she thought.

"My LOVE life was a sham and YOU know it! You put a spell on a man and made him fall in love with me against his wishes! How and why did you do that? Did you enjoy watching the whole thing unfold from inside that safe little lamp of yours? I made a fool out of myself stalking the poor man all over town then wound up pregnant with his love child. He never loved me and now he had decided to kidnap my baby because he thinks I am crazy. And now -YOU are going to get my baby back for me."

"As you wish pretty lady," replied Cordell.

"Oh NO! Cordell. This is not a wish, this is a command! They are not the same thing. You will fix this and then I will make a wish, a wish for you to never be able to grant anyone wishes again!"

"Ahhh, but you see, sweet Delia, now you have exercised your last two wishes."

"No.....I haven't officially 'wished' for anything. You are trying to trick me."

"Delia, don't despair, I can do the things you wish for. How about we start with the second. You see, if you release me from the lamp, I will no longer be able to grant wishes, but I will be able to become more, shall we say, human......and in my human form it will be easier for me to then rescue your child. No harm, no foul as they say."

Delia thought for a minute.  He had a point. How could he find and get Jewel back if he were trapped in a lamp and if he was no longer a Genie, then he wouldn't be able to hurt anyone anymore.  Maybe this could work.

"Cordell, is it? I think maybe I can go along with your proposal. How do we get started. I don't want to waste any more time. My baby needs me and I don't know what Troy could be up to. He may be planning to leave the country with his boyfriend."

Cordell busted out laughing. "Did you say boyfriend? No wonder things went awry. Oopsie! My bad!"

"Not. Funny.  Just tell me. How do we release you?"

Chapter 93 - Jewel

Once Delia had come to terms that Troy was not her "True Love" and only a cruel joke by the Genie, she fortified herself for what was to come and decided not to contact Troy again. She had already disrupted the poor man's life enough and wouldn't do more by insisting he be a part of her life.

She had raised more than one child alone so was no stranger to being a single mom and besides, she had enough money now that working would be secondary to giving her all to the life growing inside of her.

Delia went about her daily chores while she awaited the birth of her child. She didn't think of it as Troy's anymore.  She wouldn't burden him with that. She decided that once the baby was born, she would leave Riverview and she and her child could start a new life somewhere else.

Delia checked the real estate listings and found some interesting cities that might be good. She narrowed it down to Lucky Palms. It was in the middle of a desert and far away from everything here. She put a deposit down on a house. In a few months she and her child would start a new life.

This was becoming an annoying habit. Why couldn't she just be normal?  She knew so much more now than she ever had and knew this was why. Things were certainly not as they seemed to those that were 'normal'. She could hear her Mother's words: Learn all you can about the supernatural. They can do you harm if you aren't prepared. After she and her baby settled in Lucky Palms, she would make this her life's mission. She no longer doubted her mother's sanity and vowed to never be surprised again by something 'unnatural' or 'supernatural'.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the meantime, Troy called Sherman to come to meet him after work at a new 'safehouse' he had just purchased. He had a plan that he needed his help and support with.

Troy was overjoyed to see Sherman drive up and rushed out to give him a hug. He needed to feel the comfort of his arms around his neck.

"Please, come inside. We need to talk," said Troy.

Sherman followed Troy inside and they sat down.

"What is this place Troy?" asked Sherman.

Sherman ignored him and started talking nervously, "I have been watching her house, Delia's house. She is definitely pregnant and I believe it is my child. The timing is right. I can't stand by and let my child be raised by a crazy woman. And let me tell you, she is manipulative and crazy. There is something about her. She is more powerful than she knows. I think she is a fairy or part fairy and part witch maybe. I am not sure she even knows."

Sherman sighed and looked at his lover. "I will support you in whatever you want to do. You are a very powerful witch and if you feel like this is your child, then we should help raise it. But again, what is this house?"

Troy pulled Sherman into an embrace. "Thank you for standing by me. You know that you are the only one. I was tricked by her. She cast a love spell on me. I was defenseless. I would never cheat on you."

"Stop it Troy. I told you already, I don't hold it against you. I love you and trust you. If I didn't know you were a witch, maybe that would be another story."
Troy continued, "Thanks Sherm. But you don't understand. I don't want to help raise my kid. You and I are going to raise it."

"Yeah, right!" scoffed Sherman, "Delia's just going to hand her baby over to us. You know she won't do that."

"No. I will sneak in at night while Delia is asleep and take the child. I have the access code to her alarm system. Delia gave it to me when we ... um...the night you picked me up."

"What??? Kidnapping? I thought you meant joint custody," replied Sherman confused.

"No, it's my child. It's not kidnapping it," rationalized Troy.

"Okay, if you say so. I love you and it sounds like you are determined," said Sherman.

"Thanks for understanding Sherman. Without you, I am not so sure I would have even bothered. But now, we can be a family."

"This house? This is where you plan to hide the baby isn't it?" asked Sherman again.

"Yes, we will hide out here until it is safe. No one knows about it. I bought it under a shell company so it can't be traced back to me."

Sherman just sighed and leaned into Troy's embrace. He loved him so much and was so lucky to have found him. He would do anything Troy asked.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Delia went into Labor. Even though she felt she was a 'pro' at this, it was still stressful. She managed to get herself to the hospital and resisted calling Troy. It would only cause stress. It wouldn't be long now before she could move. She already had everything set.

Delia delivered a little girl. She thought she was so beautiful that she named her Jewel.  Jewel looked so much like her father and that made Delia happy.  One day Delia would tell her daughter about her father, but only after she was old enough to deal with the circumstances.

The limo picked up Delia and her new daughter from the hospital and took them home. On the way Delia thought about how lucky she was to be able to have another child. Troy was a good man and didn't deserve all that had happened to him. She wouldn't do more to ruin his life.

When they arrived at home, Delia tucked Jewel into the crib that she had used for her last two daughters. That seemed like a lifetime ago. She teared up when she thought about the last child that had inhabited the crib and the memory of Vladimir so lovingly tucking her in. They were the reason Delia was even in Riverview. Victoria and her father who both now haunted her basement.

After she fed and tucked her daughter in, Delia went to bed happy but thoroughly exhausted.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Troy excitedly called Sherman, "Sherman, come over, quick.  I did it. I have the baby, a little girl. Delia aptly named her Jewel; she is precious and beautiful.....Come now. I am going to put some enchantments in her room so that no one will be able to see her or get into the room. Hurry!"

After Troy hung up the phone with Sherman, he did just as he said he was going to do, he got out his wand and began the incantations that would protect his child and keep her safe - and more importantly keep out Delia.

Troy didn't feel bad about keeping Jewel from her mother. He knew he and Sherman would be able to care for her and see to it that she grew up shielded from the wickedness that was her mother. He wanted to be sure his daughter was never exposed to her mother's twisted ways.

"Don't cry little Jewel," Troy cooed to his daughter after casting the spell, "at least your mother gave you a name that was indeed worthy of you. You are my Jewel and always will be. Here you go, drink up sweetheart. Your other Daddy will be here shortly and I want you to be good for him. He will surely love you as much as I do."

As soon as Troy finished feeding his daughter, Sherman arrived at what they were calling their 'safe house'.

"Isn't she beautiful," said Troy as he handed Jewel to Sherman, "she is perfect in spite of having such a sick, controlling and manipulating mother."

Sherman held the baby like he might break her and just looked at her.  "Yes," replied Sherman, "she is beautiful, like her father. But, Troy, I was thinking - we just committed a Federal offense. Kidnapping is punishable by life imprisonment. Maybe we need to return her."

"Don't worry about it. I have connections. Let me see what I can do."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later that afternoon as Sherman was getting ready to leave for work Troy called him over. "I have everything taken care of. My City Hall connections came through - with a bit of witchcraft. They won't remember anything. I had Jewel's birth certificate changed to show that I am her biological father and that a surrogate carried the child to term. It also states that you are her adopted father - just one thing - we need to get married. So no worries. And with your military connections, we have nothing to fear."

"I don't know about getting married," stammered Sherman, "that is a  big step. We hadn't really talked about it."

"Circumstances have changed! We didn't talk about having a baby either! Are you going to back out now?"

"No. No Troy, let's do it, but I have to leave now. I am sorry Troy. This is so overwhelming. We can talk this evening when I get off work."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Delia woke with a start. Things were way too quiet. She lay in bed for a minute trying to remember why then realized what was wrong. It was daylight. She had slept too long and hadn't heard Jewel cry. She jumped up and ran to Jewel's crib - her heart pounding in her chest and fearing the worst - that something horrible might be wrong with her baby and praying that she was just a really good baby and was quietly lying in her crib.
What Delia didn't expect to see was an empty crib. She was horrified. Delia just stood and stared, willing her baby to appear. But there was no one in the house. It was deathly quiet.

Nothing was disturbed, but Jewel was definitely missing. Babies don't disappear into thin air. Somehow someone had kidnapped her daughter. She grabbed her phone and called the police.

The only person she could think of that would do this was Troy. But he didn't believe that she was even pregnant.  She never called him again after that horrible night and he hadn't tried to contact her either. As far as she knew, he didn't believe she was even pregnant and even more didn't believe it was his if she was.

She had no idea. No one had a grudge against her as far as she knew. She was an architect, nothing more.

A little later the detective arrived to take her statement. She explained what had happened and then he asked to see where the baby slept.

Delia took him into her room where the empty crib stood making her heart break once again as she looked at it hoping to see her baby inside.

"No. The alarm was set. I don't know how anyone could have bypassed it. My son knows the code. He is a firefighter, perhaps you know him. Lucas Schlick?"

"Anyone else at all, help, friends, the baby's father, boyfriends that might have your access code?"

"Umm," she said as she suddenly remembered having given Troy the code in good faith, "No - no one else." Delia knew this was something she would have to deal with carefully. Troy was very high up in the local government. He would have ways to block any investigation.

"I am sorry Mrs. Schlick, but we need to know who the baby's father is so we can question him. Usually these cases are relatives unless you receive a ransom call."

"I, I am embarrassed," she lied, "I was drunk - it was a one night stand and I never got his name or saw him again."

The detective sighed. She couldn't tell if he didn't believe her or just thought she was a slut. "Please let me know if anyone calls. It could very well have been a well planned kidnapping or just the father wanting his child. We will put taps on your phones and station an undercover cop to keep an eye on your property."

The detective shook her hand as he was leaving and said, "Let me know if you hear or see anything unusual."

Delia's heart sank as he left. She knew...it was Troy. It had to be but she couldn't tell this to the detective.

Delia knew who she was going to make help her get her baby back.

She still had two wishes and she was gonna make them count!  And she didn't have much time. She needed to find her daughter before the cops tapped her phone and started watching the house. She had to find Troy. She was pretty sure he wasn't stupid enough to have Jewel at his house.
